That ONE time a Blue Angel landed on a Carrier
In the 78 years the Blue Angels have existed, a Blue jet piloted by a Blue suit has only landed on an Aircraft Carrier ONE time... In this video, we break down what happened, as well as why it is such a rare event.
In November of 1998, CMDR Patrick Driscoll became the first and to this day only active team member of the Blue Angels to land on an Aircraft carrier in a Blue Angel F/A-18. The landing happened on the then brand new USS Harry S. Truman - the first time the Blues landed on a "Haze Grey and Underway" Aircraft Carrier. Cmdr. Driscoll spent some time talking with sailors for a Veterans Day event, and conducted 2 landings and 2 take-offs in the iconic Blue jet.

    That is very interesting because in the recent interview with The Fighter Pilot Podcast, Capt. Gil Rud (that was the Blue Angels Boss during the transition from the A-4 to the F/A-18A) said that the Hornet they got were old airframes (pre-production IIRC) that where not carrier qualified

    It blows my mind that the Blues still have Tailhooks... Tailhooks are a huge liability for the PC's & Ordies launching & catching... And they weigh over 250 pounds... I was always under the impression that the Gun and Tailhook was tossed out for Aerodynamic purposes...empty that gun weighs over 400 pounds (ask me how I know)... Guess I was wrong 😳

      The hooks are used in 2 maneuvers during every demo! Mostly for show, but still. They’re visible. I imagine the team likes reminding the public they land on ships. 😂

    Nice! Simply for PR, you'd think the Navy would try to make this a standard thing following Change of Command. If for no other reason, because they can. Given Marketing and PR expenditures, this would be a real investment because of what's required and the personnel involved; Patch Worthy! Once every four years is spaced out enough to make it a very big deal each time it takes place, for all involved.

    • @aerospacehorizons
      @aerospacehorizons 5 днів тому

      Yep would certainly be good for PR. Per others comments though, I don't think the current Super Hornets the team flies are carrier capable anymore.

    My dad had an international job and we were living in Amman, Jordan in the late 70s. The Blue Angels flew over our school (they did a lot of overseas good will tours, at least back then). It wasn't a regular school day it was maybe the 4th of July or something because I remember a country fair atmosphere, all the kids and all the parents were there, barbecues and games, then the Blue Angels roared by, did a couple of rolls and loops, released some smoke. Everyone was clapping and laughing and half an hour later the pilots were at the barbecue, still in their flight suits, chatting with people and ruffling our hair and we kids went mad! The british Red Arrows did it too once. The pilots were much more reserved when they visited, they changed into field uniforms, they didn't mingle as freely and of course they flew less sleek looking planes (to a 10 year old. I think they flew Hawker Hawks, tubby little training jets that were fantastically manoeverable but didn't look like much while the Angels flew decomissioned fighters). Anyway the kids were all team Blue Angels after that.

    @aerospacehorizons Can you (or anyone else here) help me out about the Hornet aircraft type? You stated that the Blue Angels flew the F18 Hornet from 19084 tot 2020, but this is what I get from Wikipedia: McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet (F/A-18B as #7): November 1986 - 2010 Boeing F/A-18A/C (B/D as #7) Hornet: 2010-2020 Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet (F/A-18F as #7): 2020- Are the first two regarded as the same airplane and the third as a completely different type? Thanks!

    • @aerospacehorizons
      @aerospacehorizons 10 днів тому

      Yes - then A/B and C/D are close enough that they are generally considered the same jet. Improvements were made in the C/D but they were evolutionary. The E/F models that the team flies now are the Super Hornet which is an entirely different jet. So much so that it has a different radio call (Rhino) because the weight is so different that the carrier catapults and traps need to be set differently for it. The Hornet name was only really kept to satisfy congress’ desire for an evolution of an existing jet design (thinking it’d be cheaper). The design is very very different - even though I’ve heard it was designed to fly similarly to the legacy hornet to make it easy for pilots to qualify in both aircraft. I did a video on the channel about the name change: ua-cam.com/video/UY84_OHKH3s/v-deo.htmlsi=E9wshmROuKhBkUIT
